If you’ve got ice building on your eaves every winter or floors so cold you won’t cross them barefoot, you already know you need to do something about it.
Here’s the part you might not know: the work that fixes those problems — attic air sealing and insulation, crawlspace and floor insulation — is exactly the work Ontario’s insulation rebate pays for. So you’re not just spending to fix a nagging problem. You fix it, and the government covers up to half the cost.
That changes the math on finally dealing with it. Here’s how the rebate works for a Keswick home, verified as of July 2026.
The work you need = the work that’s rebate-eligible
The two most common Keswick home problems, and the rebate measures that cover the fix:

How much you get
Two routes. Every rebate is 50% of what you spend on that measure, up to a cap — not a flat cheque.
Route 1 — attic only (no energy assessment)
Best if the attic (and your ice-dam problem) is all you’re tackling right now.

Attic + crawlspace alone clears the two-upgrade minimum — which, for a Keswick home with both ice dams and cold floors, is exactly the combination you’d be doing anyway.
You don’t need natural gas to qualify
Important for the Keswick/Georgina area, where plenty of homes — especially older lakeside ones — run on propane, oil, or electric heat. The rebate’s heating requirement has two ways to qualify:
- Natural gas (Enbridge Gas serves the area), or
- Electricity, oil, propane, or wood, as long as your home is connected to Ontario’s electricity grid.
So a lakeside home on propane with hydro service qualifies. No gas line needed — a point a lot of homeowners get wrong and miss out on.
And if you’re on propane or oil, the savings from fixing those cold floors and heat leaks are even bigger, because you pay more per unit of heat than a gas home.
Do it before winter — the timing that matters
This is the practical bit for a lake home. The problems you’re fixing — ice dams and cold floors — are winter problems. You want the work done before the cold, not during it.
But peak insulation demand runs October through February, when everyone else finally deals with their cold house too. Energy advisors and contractors book out, and lakeside/rural properties can take longer to schedule.
Book the assessment in the warmer months and the whole sequence — assessment, work, follow-up — runs smoothly, so you’re warm and ice-dam-free for the winter you’re planning for, not the one after. The program can also change or end at any time, so a completed rebate beats a planned one.
How the bundled path works — and where people lose it
- Pre-retrofit energy assessment with a registered energy advisor — before any work. Fee applies; ask what it is. ⚠️ Start work before this and it’s disqualified. Most common mistake.
- Renovation Upgrade Report — rebates come only from recommended measures.
- Complete at least two recommended upgrades (100% coverage where required). ⚠️ Do one and you get nothing.
- Follow-up assessment, same advisor.
- Rebates issued after submission — by cheque for non-gas homes, or an Enbridge bill credit for gas customers.
Is there free insulation? (Income-qualified households)
Separate from the rebate, Enbridge Gas runs an income-qualified program providing free insulation and draft-proofing to households that qualify on income — and it can include rentals where the tenant qualifies and the owner participates. If your household income qualifies, this may beat the rebate. Check directly with Enbridge Gas for current thresholds.
